With all of Suffolk County High School Sports shut down until the beginning of the new year, we have been hearing a lot about how this is affecting our Student Athletes mentally. It also makes all of wonder if the Executive Board of Section XI had even taken the time to look into this very important aspect of these athletes lives.
How participating in a sport helps reduce stress and depression, boost mood and helps keep the mind sharp are all very important factors especially those students in their senior year of High School.
There is a tremendous amount of presser on them, from applying to colleges, taking their final rounds of SAT tests (Though we know that due to Covid-19 many colleges are doing away with the need for these grades, but not all of them are.) Writing out essays, getting recommendations, and so on. There is a lot of work that needs to be done for their future, participating in their sport would be such a welcome break in all of this. Not to mention the need to add their sports career into their applications, if they plan to play in college.
Now, those that are looking to play in a D1 or D2 College, they have to figure out how to get their information in-front of those college coaches. They only have stats and film from their junior yr of high school and we all know how much their ability, and phsyical growth changes between junior yr and senior yr. By not allowing them to play your taking away their dreams.
Sports also teaches these students the leadership and team building qualities that a college is looking for. If they cant be on the field, implementing their abilities, where else can they learn from?
No, holding off sports (as of this moment, but no one believes a change happening in January if there is no vaccine) is hurting more than helping. We have all heard the stories about the increase in abuse while we were on lock-down, I cant imagine the mental strain it has put on our Student Athletes.
Being outdoors, being with the students they have played football, soccer, and field hockey with since a young age is where these student need to be. They need the support of each other in these very changing time in their lives, and the Executive Board of Section XI is keeping this from them. These people are educators, and Athletic Directors, they know what this is doing to them.
Each and every one of them should be ashamed of what they are doing to these students.
They need to reverse their call, and allow these kids back on the playing fields where they belong.
